Guide to Residency in Paraguay 2026: How to obtain your residency under the New Immigration Law

Moving to Paraguay is one of the smartest decisions a foreigner can make today. However, since the implementation of the new Immigration Law, the process has changed significantly. At Romero Nagy & Associates, we want you to begin this journey with complete clarity.

Temporary Residence: The mandatory entry point

Unlike in previous years, most foreigners must begin their process by obtaining Temporary Residency. This permit is valid for two years and grants the same basic rights as permanent residency: you can work, study, and obtain your Paraguayan Identity Card.

What documents do you need to prepare?

The success of your residency application depends on your documentation. At our office, we emphasize that these documents must be properly apostilled in your country of origin:

  • Passport or National Identity Document (DNI): Depending on your nationality and Mercosur agreements.
  • Criminal Record Certificate: The most critical document. It must be valid nationwide and no more than 90 days old at the time of application.
  • Birth and Civil Status Certificates: Essential to prove your identity and family ties.

The transition to Permanent Residence

After two years of temporary residency, you can apply for Permanent Residency. This is the permanent status that grants you long-term stability in the country. At Romero Nagy, we support you from day one until you receive your Permanent Residency Card, managing every renewal and administrative procedure with the National Directorate of Migration.
